SONRIS Explained
SONRIS (the Strategic Online Natural Resources Information System) is Louisiana’s official online database for accessing natural resource and regulatory information maintained by the Louisiana Department of Conservation and Energy. The system serves as a centralized, publicly accessible repository for oil and gas records, including well data, production reports, drilling permits, and related regulatory filings. SONRIS allows users to search, view, and download official data, information, and records.
In addition to oil and gas information, SONRIS provides access to mineral leasing records, coastal use permits, and interactive GIS mapping tools that help visualize wells, leases, and other resource data across the state. Designed for industry professionals, landowners, researchers, and the general public, SONRIS improves transparency and efficiency by offering 24/7 online access to Louisiana’s natural resource data and regulatory documents.
While SONRIS is a valuable resource, users should be aware that the system may contain errors or incomplete data. SONRIS was introduced in 1977, and not all historical information—such as certain well production records—was fully captured or digitized at that time. As a result, some records may be missing or incomplete within the database.
Through decades of experience, CWC has developed and maintained supplemental indexes of orders, pits, and historical records to help identify and address these gaps. When relying on SONRIS data, it is important to verify information directly with the Department of Conservation and Energy (DCE). CWC is available to assist clients with verifying, supplementing, and completing records as needed.
